CAPTURE THE EMOTION

I think so many photographers miss out on simply the ability to capture emotion in an actual image in the essence of an individual. The photo doesn’t have to be the most extravagant picture of all time but simply being able to capture a moment within a millisecond of expression is what makes and separates amateurs from professionals. When you’re on set with the client, don’t be afraid to ask them questions, don’t be scared to have a conversation, and photograph them with genuine emotion other than something that is staged. A great image of an individual is when the eyes tell the emotion.

A millisecond of emotion is captured in the eyes. That’s what Photographers Miss out on when you go out on your next session; remember, it’s all about the eyes; everything else is the icing, not the cake. That’s what a great image consists of.

Christopher D. Cavanaugh

Christopher D. Cavanaugh is originally from Walterboro, S.C.. He recalls having a camera in his hand as early as grade school. The stories he tells with his photographs are of models, celebrities, and glamorous drag performers. "I've always been into fashion. The whole celebrity aspect of my work came through my interest in fashion," says Cavanaugh.
While attending Summerville High School, he connected with many aspiring models and performers and took their pictures. Then he started shopping his work to local modeling agencies. But it wasn't until 2018 while driving part time for Uber that he got his big break.

"I picked up my ride and she asked what I did when I wasn't driving. I told her I was a fashion and celebrity photographer. She said, 'Well, guess who I am?'" It turned out she was the vice president of design and user experience for digital at BET Networks. "By the end of a 30-minute drive we were like family." Cavanaugh now calls BET a client, in addition to having worked with Tina Campbell from the duo Mary Mary, America's Next Top Model alum and actress Eva Marcille, and Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

FOTO ADVICE

While shooting in studio shooting soft light directly on the subject makes for an extremely flat image. if you want even light along your subject using a one Light setup set your main light at a 45° angle Pointed down using two Black v flats on camera right and left to bounce the light on to the subject and create depth. If you are using a two light set up. Have your main light lifted over the subject at minimum 10 feet. Point it at a 45° angle use the second light to fill-in the bottom of the subject by setting it either camera right or left and point the light up at the subject the light should be much lower thant main light at a 25 to 30° angle while using two V flats black One camera right and left.
